Donation and Loan Guidelines
Guidelines for Donation and Loan of Artifacts to
the Institute of Texan Cultures
The Institute of Texan Cultures produces and maintains exhibits that explore Texas’s cultural heritage, focusing primarily on the lifestyles and historical contributions of its varied ethnic groups. ITC’s mission is to engage lifelong learners in the understanding and celebration of Texas cultural heritage.
Curatorial Collections accepts both donations and loans for exhibition and research. Artifacts of cultural and unique value are not used for demonstration purposes and are handled only by Curatorial staff and trained Curatorial volunteers. Curatorial collections are placed in secure, climate-controlled storage until it goes on exhibit. Artifacts are researched by our team who develop the exhibit content.
If you would like to submit an artifact for consideration for donation or loan to the Institute of Texan Cultures, please review the following guidelines.
Artifact Donation and Loan Criteria
• The artifact must accurately represent an ethnic group’s cultural beliefs, traditions, inventions, and/or family history.
• The artifact must have a clear tie to Texas heritage.
• The donor/lender must be able to demonstrate clear ownership of the artifact.
• The artifact must be in reasonably good condition.
• The artifact must be deemed beneficial to the museum’s curatorial collection by the museum curator.
You can e-mail museum curator Shellie Eagan with detailed information about the artifact. Please include the following information:
• The artifact’s name
• The dimensions of the artifact
• The artifact’s place of origin
• The artifact’s significance to ethnic identity in Texas
• A jpeg photo of the artifact
• Owner’s name
• Owner’s mailing address and e-mail address
• Owner’s telephone number
Appraisals
The Institute of Texan Cultures will not assist in the valuation of any artifacts and cannot offer referrals to appraisers.
Artifact owners seeking appraisals can seek assistance from the American Society of Appraisers or the Appraisers Association of America.
